Events in 2010
Fun Fly
Our Fun Fly was held on May 22nd. For the first time in years, we had several
contest planned and prizes to award. At
our 2009 fun fly, people started eating around 9:30. Pat Kenner was delivering food and saw
everyone eating and she made the comment “if you are going to eat so early, you
should have breakfast rather than a barbeque.
So we decided that we would start serving pancakes and sausage along
with Starbucks coffee at 8:30. That
morning turned out to be cold and windy, so we set up tables for eating inside
and the back room of the trailer was converted to a kitchen. Don Rogers was in charge of the breakfast. With the help of Alice Rogers, Barbara Akle, Anne
Brennan, and Delores Jocober running the kitchen and
serving, everyone was fed by 10:30.
The contest though got off to a rough start, with
winds of around 10 mph and gust up to 22mph and a balmy 54 degrees at 8:30 and
a high of 56 for the day. Some of the contest were canceled but finally a few brave soles decided
they could still fly the bomb drop and pylons and some impromptu events. Check out the photos and videos (never seen
before) at SLO
Flyers Fun Fly May 22nd 2010 (Barbara Akle)
All in all, it was a very successful day.

Aero 101 Day
Aero 101 day was held on Oct 30th. Aero 101 day is when teams of four Cal Poly
first year aero students fly, or attempt to fly blue foam gliders of their
design. Flight time times the number of pennies
they carry is the score for that flight.
Each team is given up to three attempts, if the plane holds together
that long. Each team later has to make a
presentation on their analysis of the flight.
Barbara Akle took some photos and a video of the day. The video can be seen here.

On November 5th, Tony Gallo, Daryl Riekki,
Fred Jacober, and Rick Johnson showed up at the field to find a couple Cal Poly
Students setting up a rather large rocket on the runway. It turns out that they were preparing for a
presentation to a group of

Andy Brennan, Wade Akle, and perspective member Howard
Grisham sanded and sealed the flight line and picnic tables. Tony Gallo donated the sealant.

Glider Day
Starting back in August, we are dedicating one day a
month to gliders. The current day is the
fourth Saturday each month. We are
starting to see quite a few more gliders at the field now. There was initially a concern about powered
planes landing and taking off with the tow line still on the runway, but that
turned out not to be a problem. Dig out
your old gliders and bring them out.
This is my last issue of the Windshear. Daryl Riekki is taking over as Secretary and
Windshear editor for 2011.
